The Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI) held its first plenary meeting under the Argentine Presidency on 7 February 2018 in Buenos Aires. The day-long event enabled attendees to gain a better understanding of Argentina’s priorities and chart a path for the year ahead. Organised around four sessions, the Plenary took a deep dive into Argentina’s main theme of digitisation and informality. It also enabled the various GPFI subgroups to update their terms of reference and finalise their work plans accordingly. Topics covered during the sessions include ongoing efforts on remittances and the financial inclusion of forcibly displaced persons. Argentina hosted the first GPFI workshop of its G20 Presidency on 6 February 2018 in Buenos Aires. Participants came from governments and diverse entities working on financial inclusion around the world. GPFI 2018 workshop in Argentina A key moment toward implementation of Argentina’s priority of digitisation and informality, the workshop was an opportunity to share country experiences and success stories in the area of inclusive finance. Topics covered included digital identification, electronic payments infrastructure, alternative data sources for credit worthiness, as well as consumer protection and financial literacy.

  Under its G20 Presidency’s theme of “Building Consensus for Fair and Sustainable Development” Argentina has released the GPFI Priorities Paper, which identifies the priorities for 2018. The document focuses on the role of digitisation to financially include the underserved population, particularly those in the informal economy. This agenda has been designed to be relevant for both developing and developed countries. The GPFI held its 3rd Meeting under the German G20 Presidency on 12 October 2017 in Washington D.C. The German Presidency presented the relevant financial inclusion results of the G20 Hamburg Summit and the incoming Argentine Presidency introduced planned GPFI priorities for 2018.

G20 Leaders have acknowledged the importance of financial inclusion as multiplier for poverty eradication, job creation, gender equality and women’s empowerment and expressed support of the work of the GPFI. In their Communiqué, G20 Leaders explicitly welcomed the updated G20 Financial Inclusion Action Plan and the ongoing work on improved access to financing to help SMEs to integrate into sustainable and inclusive global supply chains.

At the G20 Leaders Summit held in July 7-8, 2017, in Hamburg, Germany, the G20 Leaders welcomed the updated G20 Financial Inclusion Action Plan (FIAP) and expressed overall support of the ongoing work of the Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI) in their Communiqué. The 2017 G20 FIAP serves as framework and substantive basis for the activities of the GPFI.

Following the 2017 GPFI Forum on May 2-3, the GPFI held its plenary in Berlin on May 4. Under a large participation of 80 GPFI member representatives, the G20 2017 Financial Inclusion Action Plan (FIAP) was approved. Recognizing among others the mainstreaming of digitization and the importance of aligning the work of the GPFI with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the 2017 G20 FIAP will guide the work of the GPFI in the coming years.
